Softshell

Is softshell the same as rainwear?

Softshell is often wind- and water-resistant, but not the same as real rainwear. It's best for drier everyday weather.

Softshell is easy to misread. It often looks like an outer garment, feels soft and tough, and many models stand up to wind and light rain. But softshell isn't the same as real rainwear.

The best thing about softshell is the mix of freedom of movement, breathability and weather protection. The fabric is often stretchy, which feels nice for kids who climb, cycle, run and play. It suits dry or half-dry days when there's a bit of wind, chilly air or short light drizzle.

But in steady rain, wet sand, slush or puddle play, softshell often isn't enough. Many softshell garments are water-resistant, not waterproof. That means drops can bead on the surface for a while, but if the rain keeps going or the child sits on wet ground, moisture eventually pushes through.

Softshell therefore works best as a practical everyday garment between fleece and a shell jacket. In spring and autumn it can be perfect for walks, playgrounds, the cycle ride to preschool or dry preschool days. If the weather app shows hours of rain, choose a shell or PU rainwear instead.
