Is bamboo always better for baby clothes?
Bamboo viscose can feel soft and nice, but the word “bamboo” doesn't always mean the garment is more natural or better.
“Bamboo” sounds natural, soft and gentle on the skin. Many baby garments are marketed as bamboo because they feel smooth, cool and flowing. But it helps to know what the word actually means on the care label.
In many cases bamboo garments are really viscose or rayon made from bamboo as a raw material. That means the bamboo plant has been chemically processed into a new fibre. The result can definitely be a soft, nice fabric, but it isn't the same as a garment made of natural bamboo fibres in a simple sense. So be careful with claims like “naturally antibacterial” or “always more environmentally friendly” unless there's clear documentation.
For baby garments, bamboo viscose can still be a lovely material. It drapes softly, often feels smooth and suits bodies, pyjamas and thin layers next to the skin. But always check care instructions and quality. Some viscose garments can go limp, pill or lose shape if washed hard. If the garment will be used often, look at fabric blends, seams and how the fabric feels when you give it a gentle tug.
